Our Camping Essentials for a Comfortable Outdoor Adventure

A great camping trip doesn’t require bringing everything you own.

But having the right things with you can make spending time outdoors a lot more enjoyable.

Over the years, one thing we’ve learned from hunting, fishing, camping, and traveling is that preparation matters. Weather changes, plans change, and the outdoors has a way of reminding you that you aren’t always in control.

The goal isn’t to prepare for every possible situation.

It’s simply to give yourself enough flexibility to enjoy the adventure.

Dress for Changing Conditions

One lesson our outdoor experiences continue to reinforce is the importance of layers.

Temperatures can feel completely different from morning to afternoon and again after sunset.

During our spring bear hunting experience in Manitoba, for example, we went from warm temperatures and sunshine to rain, strong winds, colder conditions, and eventually snow.

Having additional layers and rain protection made a difference.

The same principle applies when we’re camping.

Check the forecast, but don’t assume the forecast will be perfect.

Keep the Basics Dependable

Some gear doesn’t need to be fancy.

It just needs to work.

A comfortable sleeping setup, dependable lighting, appropriate footwear, weather protection, and the basic equipment needed for whatever activities you’re planning can go a long way.

We’d rather spend less time worrying about equipment and more time enjoying why we came outside in the first place.

Don’t Forget Comfort

Camping doesn’t have to mean being uncomfortable.

A few simple comforts can completely change the experience.

Something warm to wear when the temperature drops. A comfortable place to sit after a long day. Food and drinks you actually enjoy. A good cup of coffee in the morning.

Those little things become especially appreciated after spending hours outside.

Bring a Camera

This one probably won’t surprise anyone following Reagle Adventures.

We love documenting our travels.

Over the years, we’ve collected thousands of photographs and hours of video from our adventures.

You don’t have to photograph every second of a camping trip, but having a camera or phone nearby gives you a chance to preserve those unexpected moments.

Leave Room for the Adventure

Finally, don’t plan every minute.

Some of our favorite memories come from things we didn’t expect.

Take a walk.

Go fishing.

Sit around camp longer than planned.

Watch the sunset.

Explore something that caught your attention earlier in the day.

Good preparation gives you the freedom to stop thinking about what you forgot and start enjoying where you are.

After all, that’s why you went camping in the first place.
