Chasing Pike in the Adirondacks: Where Our Adventures Began

Every adventure story has a beginning.

For us, one of those beginnings happened in 1989 when we packed up and headed to the Adirondack Mountains to fish for pike.

We had already known each other for years. We met in fifth grade, became best buds in junior high, and eventually married in 1987. The outdoors had always been part of both of our lives, but this trip felt different. We were heading somewhere new together, excited about the fishing and everything that came with exploring a new place.

Looking back now, it feels like the beginning of something much bigger.

A Love for Fishing That Started Early

Fishing wasn’t new to either of us.

Chuck grew up fishing with his dad, grandpa, and uncle. He spent countless hours fishing a nearby private lake, learning where fish liked to hide, how they behaved, and how to put a lure in just the right place.

Pam also grew up around the water. Some of her childhood memories include riding her bike to a neighborhood farm to fish and spending summer weekends at her grandparents’ cottage on Pymatuning, where fishing was simply part of enjoying the outdoors.

So when the opportunity came to travel to the Adirondacks in search of pike, it combined two things we already loved: fishing and exploring.

More Than What You Catch

Of course, catching fish is part of what makes fishing exciting.

There’s nothing quite like that moment when you feel something on the other end of the line and suddenly all of your attention is focused on what might be beneath the water.

But over the years, we’ve realized that the fish aren’t the only reason we remember these trips.

We remember where we were.

We remember who was there.

We remember the scenery, the conversations, the excitement, and sometimes the things that didn’t go according to plan.

The outdoors has a funny way of turning ordinary moments into memories.

Where the Journey Took Us

We couldn’t have known in 1989 where our love for adventure would eventually take us.

Since that trip, we’ve traveled across the United States and to places including Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Namibia, Denmark, and Spain.

Through it all, the idea has remained surprisingly simple: explore, stay curious, appreciate where we are, and enjoy doing it together.

That’s part of why we created Reagle Adventures.

We have decades of photographs, videos, stories, and memories waiting to be shared.

And when we think back to where so much of that journey began, we can’t help but remember two young adventurers heading to the Adirondack Mountains excited to catch some pike.

Sometimes you don’t realize you’re at the beginning of an adventure until years later.
